Walk out of the car park and turn right, away from the village centre.
Turn left down the road signposted to the swimming pool. Cross the River Wear by using the
stepping stones. Turn left, following farm track and footpath sign for the Weardale Way.
After the farm, the track becomes a narrow footpath. Keep to the riverside path which leads under a railway bridge
Keep to the river bank until you cross a wooden stile. Head across field towards a metal gate.
Cross a wooden stile next to the metal gate and follow the path round to the left.
Cross another wooden stile (this time next to a wooden gate). Walk through static caravan park.
Leave the caravan site by the main entrance and tun left along road. Cross bridges over railway
and then the river. When the minor road meets the main road, turn left.

Turn right into cul-de-sac opposite petrol station. Walk past bungalows and turn right again
at public footpath sign. Pass through a metal gate into field. Walk alongside stone wall.
Cross a wooden footbridge and path lead to the left, alongside stream. The walk lead up a wooded valley.
Cross a wooden stile. Where path joins from right, continue alongside stream. Cross a wooden footbridge and follow path
up opposite side of valley. Cross wooden stile over wire fence and then ladder stile over stone wall.

Leave the road where it swings to the right, taking the
signposted footpath by the left hand side of Moor Edge Cottage. Pass through a narrow wooden gate and up a steep grassy bank.
Ignore the farm track going to the right and keep straight ahead up the bank to a stone wall.
Follow the path as it sweeps to the left alongside the wall enclosing a small plantation.
Bear left between two widely spaced stone walls. Where the path divides, keep to the one which is close to the right hand wall.
The track divides again just after passing a gate marked private. We followed the left hand fork.
The path leads above extensive quarry workings. Bear left by a small wooden waymark and left again a few yards further along
the path. Fork left again by another small wooden marker. Follow narrow path round the slope (rather than heading down to
the left and yet another small marker). The path meets a wall, then a wire fence. Go through a
gate by a derelict building and turn left on to road.

Leave road by turning left before Campbell House (along Field Row, leading to Wear View).
Proceed along stony track, through metal gate. The path runs alongside the quarry workings. Go through
a kissing gate, cross two bridges and then go through another kissing gate. A third kissing gate
leads to a narrow path which emerges on a road. |
|
Turn left, walking along the road passing the church on the right.
Turn right down the road just past the church. This road leads to Stanhope market place. Turn right
to return to the Durham Dales Centre car park. |
